Hand-Painted Furniture: 3D Cube Cabinet Makeover
Ever looked at an old furniture piece and imagined something bold and unique? That’s exactly what I envisioned for this hand-painted furniture 3d cubes.
I found this vintage small cabinet on Marktplaats. Chipped veneer, missing legs, and hidden under layers of varnish, it wasn’t much to look at. But with its curved doors and strong wood grain, I knew it had the potential to become a hand-painted 3D cube statement piece.
Rather than a simple repaint, I wanted to push the design further—a bold geometric transformation blending vintage charm with modern art.
Inspired by Escher’s cube patterns and the vibrant aesthetics of the 1980s, I hand-painted an eye-catching 3D cube design while keeping some of the original wood exposed. The result? A striking hand-painted furniture makeover that sold far quicker than I expected!
Step 1: Prepping the Cabinet and Adding Legs
Before painting, the cabinet needed a solid foundation. The missing legs made it feel unfinished, so I started there.
- Added matte black metal legs to elevate the piece
- Reinforced the base for extra stability
With the structure sorted, it was time to prep the wood:
- Cleaned the surface thoroughly to remove dust and grime
- Stripped down the old varnish to reveal the natural grain
- Repaired a chipped veneer section on the right door
See How to Repair Chipped Veneer for more details on working with veneer.
Step 2: Sealing the Wood with Shellac
Before painting, I applied shellac to the exposed wood sections. This step was key for:
- Enhancing the depth of the natural grain
- Working as a primer for the painted sections to prevent bleed-through.

Step 3: Creating the 3D Cube Paint Design
The hand painted 3d cubes looks complicated, but it’s all about careful taping. Here’s how I did it:
- Measured and marked the cube layout with a ruler and pencil
- Used high-quality painter’s tape to section off each colour
- Applied paint in layers, allowing each to dry before removing the tape
For the colour palette, I chose the following paints from Daydream Apothecary:
- Blooming Lovely – Soft blush pink
- Deadly Nightshade – Rich purple
- Calm Palm – Earthy green
This was my first time working with highly pigmented chalk paints, and I quickly realised that drying time was crucial. Even after 48 hours, the topcoat reactivated some of the chalk paint, causing streaking. To avoid this, I recommend:
- Letting the paint cure for at least a week before sealing
- Applying the topcoat in one fast pass without overlapping previous sections

Step 4: Applying the Protective Topcoat
With the shellac cured and the 3D paint design complete, it was time to seal everything for long-term durability.
- Applied thin, even layers of water-based polyurethane
- Allowed proper drying time between coats
- Use a high-quality synthetic brush or sponge for a smooth, streak-free finish
The combination of shellac and polyurethane kept the colours vibrant and the wood rich, ensuring this piece could withstand daily use.
The Final Reveal
This makeover exceeded my expectations.
- The hand painted 3D cube design transformed it into a functional piece of art
- The mix of natural wood and bold colour gave it a contemporary edge
- The modern legs balanced the vintage shape
What really surprised me? How fast it sold. I assumed the colour scheme might take time to find the right home, but within days, it was gone. The buyer instantly connected with its bold, artistic feel, proving that statement furniture has a place in any home—if it finds the right person. This unexpected success was a delightful surprise and a testament to the power of bold design.
It made me reflect on how fearless colour choices can attract the right audience. Sometimes, we assume neutral tones will sell better, but this project reminded me that bold design has its own place in home styling. There’s always someone looking for something unique, and when the right piece meets the right buyer, it just works.
