Decoupage with Wallpaper: Personalized Flair
Add a touch of personality to your furniture with decoupage. This technique allows you to apply wallpaper or other decorative paper to your furniture for a customized look.
Why It’s Great: Perfect for adding bold patterns or soft textures.
Best For: Drawer fronts, side tables or any other panels.
Pro Tip: Use white PVA glue to attach wallpaper directly to wood. Then, seal your work with polyurethane or varnish to protect against wear and tear
Gold Leaf Application: Luxurious Accent
Gold leaf is the ultimate way to add a touch of luxury to your furniture. This technique will make your piece shine, whether you’re highlighting intricate carvings or covering larger areas.
Why It’s Stunning: A regal and glamorous finish.
Best For: Picture frames, carved accents, and tabletops.
Pro Tip: Don’t start gold leafing internal corners like I did! It was a struggle. Start on a flat surface. Ensure you top-coat your goldleaf for durability.
Restoration Magic: Revive Old Wood Furniture
Restoration projects bring old furniture back to life. Whether it’s an antique dresser or a mid-century modern highboard, restoration is about honouring history while updating it for contemporary use.
Why It’s Rewarding: It preserves the vintage or antique craftsmanship.
Pro Tip: Use a paint stripper to remove the old finish before re-staining or repainting. Consider learning how to repair veneer damage (hint: check out my veneer refinishing and repair book!)

Paint Washing: Highlight Natural Beauty
Enhance the natural beauty of wooden furniture with paint washing. This technique uses diluted paint to create a translucent effect that lets the wood grain shine through.
Why It’s Popular: Perfect for rustic or farmhouse-style pieces. Or to create a raw, natural wood look.
Best For: Anything Really!
Pro Tip: Use white or tan paint for a soft, airy look. Learn how to paint wash furniture here. Consider also bleaching your wooden furniture prior to paint washing for a stronger effect.
Liming Wax: A Soft, Textured Finish
Liming wax is a simple yet effective way to achieve a weathered, vintage look on wooden furniture.
Why It’s Timeless: Adds a light, textured finish that enhances the wood grain.
Best For: Oak furniture, beams, and tabletops.
Pro Tip: Apply sparingly and buff with a cloth for a smooth finish. Discover more about liming wax here.
Milk Paint: Eco-Friendly Elegance
For an eco-friendly, velvety finish, milk paint is the perfect choice. It’s excellent for creating a distressed, aged look that complements vintage and modern designs.
Why You’ll Love It: Non-toxic, incredibly easy and endlessly versatile.
Best For: Chairs, cabinets, decorative items, anything that you would paint.
Pro Tip: Sand lightly after painting to achieve a soft, aged patina and topcoat with hemp oil. Explore milk paint techniques here.
Stenciling: Custom Patterns Without the Stress
Stenciling is the perfect solution for creating detailed, professional-looking designs without requiring freehand skills.
Why It’s Fun: Great for beginners and experienced refinishers alike.
Best For: Drawer fronts, tabletops, or decorative panels.
Pro Tip: Use repositionable spray adhesive on wood (not on a painted surface, I learned this the hard way!) to keep stencils in place and avoid smudging.

Staining: A Classic Technique for Richer Tones
Staining is a simple yet transformative way to enhance the natural colour of wood and add depth to your furniture. Furniture stains or dyes can highlight unique wood grain into eye-catching statements!
Why It’s Essential: Brings out the natural beauty of wood grain.
Best For: Restoration projects, outdated wood tones and amazing wood grain.
Pro Tip: Sand the surface with multiple-grit sandpapers before applying the stain for even absorption.
Protect your stain with a clear finish to ensure durability and long-lasting beauty. Unsure if you should use Stain or Wood Dyes, learn more here!
Bleaching Wood: Light and Bright Modernization
I have two favourite methods for bleaching woods light. You can use either 2 part wood bleaching solution or Hydrogen Peroxide to remove unfavourable wood tones. Those orange, red and brown tones that are currently not in style can be lightened to a more Scandinavian bright white.
You can use this method with or without a paint wash to complete your final look.
Why You’ll Love It: It’s surpisingly easy and creates a huge wow factor.
Best for: Unpopular wood tones.
Pro Tip: Watch out for high tannin woods like oak. It can bleach unfavourably.
