If you’re weighing up bleaching wood with hydrogen peroxide or a 2-part wood bleach, the choice comes down to what matters more for your project. Are you looking to control the bleaching process or get a strong, fast result? I’ve put both methods through their paces on all sorts of wood in my own workshop,…
Bleaching wood doesn’t start with the process of applying bleach. It starts with prep. If you’re at the stage where you’ve chosen your bleaching method and you’re ready to start, this is the part that decides how your result will turn out. Not the product. Not the number of coats. The prep. This is also…
Bleaching wood comes down to three steps: prep the surface, apply bleach, and let it work. This shifts wood from strong reds or deep browns to lighter, neutral tones. I didn’t nail bleaching my first time. Household bleach and online “hacks” gave me patchy or unpredictable results. After trial and error, I found two methods…
Water popping is a simple process of wetting sanded wood so the grain stands up. This simple step can change how the wood surface takes on stain. It helps the stain soak in more evenly and is often also used before water-based finishes to prevent the surface from feeling rough. I first looked into water…
When starting a new furniture project, my first decision is clear: paint, stain, or showcase the natural wood? Over the years, I’ve come to prefer keeping real wood or a good veneer as part of the design whenever possible, instead of covering everything with paint. Paint brings colour and personality, but leaving some wood visible…
One of the most common questions new furniture refinishers ask me is why a stain looked beautiful on someone else’s oak table but completely wrong on their maple dresser. They’ve used the same brand and colour of wood stain, yet their result looks muddy, blotchy, or nothing like the example they were hoping to recreate….

Now comes the part that can trip you up: picking a colour, without getting stuck overthinking. Here’s the simple process I use after refinishing a lot of pieces myself:Space. Mood. Market. Then colour….
Have you ever brought home a vintage nightstand, loved the shape, and then felt stuck on what to do next? That moment of hesitation is completely normal. Most people feel a little uncertain about what design choices to make. Getting stuck is just part of the creative process. It means you care about the outcome,…
I’ll be honest: when I first started refinishing, shellac intimidated me. I had stuck with water-based finishes because they felt safe, while shellac seemed old-fashioned and easy to get wrong. I remember the first time I tried shellac. I had a big cabinet with beautiful wood grain I wanted to highlight. After a bit of…
